South African legend, Sam Philips was announced dead on Saturday morning, 16th of January, 2021. He will be sorely missed and his fans and friends have taken to social media to pay their respects to the legend.

Sam Phillips was a South African actor ,writer ,musician author ,leader and the producer popularly known for his character as Odwa on the eighth season of the SABC1 drama series Soul City back in 2007.He was also featured as Kgosi the smart chief of the Tladi clan in the M-Net Telenovela The Wild from 2011-2012. Phillips also starred on the Mzansi most watched soapie The Queen; he played the role of Harriet Khoza's father back in 2019.

The legendary actor was a familiar face on local televisions for decades now, but watching the mainly Xhosa roles he played in the eighties and Sesotho ones in latest year, you would think that these characters have been portrayed by two different actors. He appears to have progressed not only in physical appearance but in language  likings, those who are familiar with Xhosa productions of the eighties when local television was still a newness will recall him in a famous series such as Umzi Nezinto Zawo (1987).

Connie Ferguson has confirmed on her Facebook page that Sam Phillips is no more, she wrote:

Many of his peers also paid tribute to him:

"Farewell to Actor, Writer, Music composer, Director and Producer Ntate Sam Phillips. A real jewel... rest well Ntate."

"Our deepest condolences to the family and colleagues of the veteran actor, writer and director Dr Sam Phillips."

"The award-winning actor Ntate Sam Phillips has passed away. We will remember him for his contribution to the arts industry in Mzansi. May his soul rest in peace."
